Loft Space Ideas

Most homes in the UK have unused attic or loft areas. These neglected areas are either filled with junk or are ignored until they gather enough dust to last several lifetimes. This space can be utilised to create an addition to your home. You can make it fully functional for regular use, simply by converting it into another room or lounge space. While most people have good thoughts about converting the loft, they lack ideas and creativity while redesigning the loft space.

Since lofts or attics are usually smaller in size than average room spaces in the house, designing the perfect aesthetic and making allowances for light, waterproofing, paint, décor, and so on can be challenging. Most good designers will tell you that a good loft is a fully functional one. Many people also convert their lofts to serve as guest rooms or children’s play areas. Just ensure that rooms for children and elderly citizens are easily accessible with loft ladders or a telescopic ladder.

Most people prefer utilising the loft area to decrease the space constraint elsewhere in the house. You can add habitable space to your current property without spending a lot of money on rebuilding or expansion.

Let us look at some loft space ideas that can help you with your home.

Naturally Lit Room: Nothing enhances a room better than natural light. This does not mean you don’t get to play with artificial lighting and beautiful lampshades. Instead, adding roof lights can add grace and beauty to the loft conversion or attic increase. Most older children need rooms of their own, and loft spaces, with enough natural light for studying, lounging, or reading helps bring out creativity and focus.

You can add double glazed panels with a protective film to keep out the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. These do not hinder natural light from entering the space. You can add these panels as roof lights or as dormer windows or balconies to increase the sense of space. Additional lighting, lighter colours, and less furniture always improve the appearance of space in a small or cramped area. Different natural lighting also helps keep out shadows and enhances extra liveable space.

Creative Space: The attic or loft is perfect for hobby areas, games rooms, music rooms, or dens. Film and movie aficionados can also make the attic soundproof, and convert it into a home theatre area for TV and movie viewing.

A personal home theatre with a large screen or a high res projector with the sound system will work wonders to improve your home. If you or your family members are fond of music and play an instrument, you could turn the loft into a recording studio, or simply a music room to practice music together.

Thermal insulation and soundproofing can help trap sound inside the attic and create a soundproofing effect. To decrease noise transference, you should invest in good soundproofing. Another excellent hobby area is an art space — most people who like to paint or draw love having creative spaces of their own. The same can be said for writers or novelists. Converting the loft area to accommodate the creative passions of your loved ones will add immense value to the home.

Home Bar: Many UK homes do not come with enough space for a home bar. Since most people enjoy socialising and having friends, loved ones, and family over, you could think of converting the loft space to a trendy bar. The sloping ceiling and mismatched corners can be great creative outlets for popular art or lighting to create a perfect ambience. Bold plants with spotlighting, new age posters of musicians, sports personalities, or film and TV can also add great character to your personal bar.

To increase space, convert one section of the loft into an open shelved glass bar with a countertop for mixing drinks and cocktails. You can also think of mood lighting and alcove lighting to give the entire area a pub-like feel. Tall stools with high tables can also add to a great bar experience. While concentrating on the décor, you could also swap the flooring for a polished wooden one. Identical indoor and outdoor flooring will help bring the idea together.

There are many fabulous loft space ideas that you can use to convert the area into a fully functional liveable area. The most common ones are spare bedrooms, children’s rooms, music rooms, and art spaces. Bar ideas and home theatre ideas are another great way to bring friends, loved ones, and family members together more often. Setting up a billiards table with deep alcove lighting could also help create a great space to unwind and relax.
