Buying guide to Best Planer Thicknesser

Imperfect boards don’t look great and they certainly aren’t the best to use. Fortunately, the planar thicknesser exists, combining two great processes in one, thinning out boards and imperfections to your consistent specifications with ease.

Though there are many planar thicknessers on the market varying In price, design, features and brand. We’ve handpicked our favourite 8 varying in all of the aforementioned differences and reviewed them so you can make an informed choice when purchasing.

It is ideal for working in rooms with no natural day light or on construction sites generating minimum heat when compared to a common halogen bulb. The machine is able to clean wood up to 330mm wide and 152mm thick. Its two blades are capable of removing up to 3mm of material per pass making it more than capable for any job. It has a feed rate of 7 metres per minute which is slightly lower than some other machines though it makes up for it in trimming depth. It weighs 35Kg, has a table measuring 840x330mm, 2 integrated HPHSS reversible planar blades, push stick and extraction nozzle to round it out.

Key features:

  • Accepts wood up to 330mm wide and 152mm thick
  • Feed rate of 7 metres per minute
  • Two HPHSS reversible planar blades remove up to 3mm at a time

This middle range planar thicknesser from DART is ideal for a busy workshop capable of handling most jobs on its 1280W motor. It has a maximum width of 250mm and a maximum height of 120mm so ensure its capable of handling the wood you need it to. It features a strong tilting aluminium fence between 0-45 degrees and has a feed rate of 6 metres per minute which is slightly on the lower side. However, it has a thicknesser capacity of 3mm and planer capacity of 2mm per pass. The planer bench measures 920 x 262mm, while the machine weighs 33.5Kg and has a dust extraction port of 100mm.

Key features:

  • Planes wood up to 250mm wide and 120mm thick
  • 3mm thicknesser and 2mm planer per pass
  • Bench measures 920x 262mm

The DeWalt DW733 has a powerful 1800W Motor and was designed in mind to give complete portability though it does still weigh 33.6Kg. The cutter head is locked in place by the head lock feature removing any movement whilst cutting to give a high-quality surface finish. It sports a large in and out feed table to support material as it passes through.

It can handle wood up to 317mm wide and 152mm thick and the 4-post design allows the cutter to move up and down smoothly. It has holes in the back which enable the machine to be fitted to a bench if necessary and it has a planer depth of 2mm per pass with a no load speed of 10000 rpm. It has a feed rate of 8m per minute which is pretty high on our list, making quick work of any job.

Key features:

  • Planes wood up to 317mm wide and 152mm thick
